1. Ensure the stable start of the vehicle: the vehicle is in a static state before starting. If the engine and the gearbox are rigidly connected, once the gear is engaged, the vehicle will suddenly move forward due to the sudden connection of power, which will not only cause damage to the mechanical parts, but also the driving force is not enough to overcome the huge inertia force generated by the forward movement of the vehicle, causing the engine speed to drop sharply and stall. If the engine and the gearbox are temporarily separated by the clutch during starting, and then the clutch is gradually engaged, the torque transmitted by the clutch can be gradually increased from zero due to the sliding friction between the driving part and the driven part of the clutch, and the driving force of the vehicle can be gradually increased, so that the vehicle can start smoothly.
2. It is convenient to shift gears: during the driving process of the vehicle, different transmission gears are often changed to adapt to the changing driving conditions. If there is no clutch to temporarily separate the engine from the gearbox, the power transmission gears engaged in the gearbox will be difficult to separate because the load is not removed and the pressure between the meshing tooth surfaces is large. On the other hand, the gears to be meshed are difficult to mesh due to the unequal circumferential speeds of the two gears. Even if it is forced into meshing, it will produce great impact on the tooth end and easily damage the machine parts. When the clutch is used to temporarily separate the engine and the gearbox for shifting, the pair of gears that were originally engaged will be easily separated because the load is removed and the pressure between the engagement surfaces will be greatly reduced. For the other pair of gears to be meshed, since the moment of inertia of the driving gear is very small after it is separated from the engine, the circumferential speed of the gears to be meshed can be made equal or nearly equal by adopting appropriate shifting action, so as to avoid or reduce the impact between gears.
3. Prevent overload of the transmission system: when the vehicle is in emergency braking, the speed of the wheels suddenly drops sharply, while the transmission system connected to the engine still maintains the original speed due to the inertia of rotation, which often produces an inertia moment in the transmission system that is much larger than the engine torque, making the parts of the transmission system easy to be damaged. Since the clutch transmits torque by friction, when the load in the transmission system exceeds the torque transmitted by friction, the driving and driven parts of the clutch will automatically slip, thus playing a role in preventing overload of the transmission system.
4. Reduce torsional vibration impact: the working principle of automobile engine determines the instability of its output torque. In the power stroke, the combustion chamber gas * * * generates great impact torque, while in other strokes, the engine is driven by inertia. Although the inertia of the rotation system of the engine itself can reduce the torsional vibration, the residual impact force still has an adverse impact on the subsequent gearbox and transmission shaft.
